Although trains are a relatively safe way to travel, we have listened to our communities who have said that sometimes they do not feel confident travelling on public transport, in particular women.
This year we are undertaking research into why women may feel unsafe on the rails and how we can help to increase their confidence. This includes the trains and stations themselves, but also the wider area outside of the stations, for example the routes leading away from the stations, signposting, lighting and car parks.
We are working with a number of partners across the three counties.
As part of the project we are offering the opportunity to attend a free days Active Bystander training facilitated by Kindling Interventions and funded by the Welsh Government. So far 15 people have attended the training.
We have attended the Merthyr Youth Council held at Safer Merthyr Tydfil and listened to the lived experience of the attendees, and will be talking to further groups.
The research will then be used to identify the next steps to help increase confidence.
